Crow’s feet, wrinkled skin at a young age? – Causes of wrinkles under the eyes

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging. There are people, however, who seem to have no time for them at all. You can’t even find crow’s feet under their eyes with a magnifying glass, even though they are over 40 or 50 years old . And you may have started to develop wrinkles around your eyes at a very young age. It’s so unfair! Do they do something about wrinkles or were they just born with good genes? Why do wrinkles develop under and around the eyes? Let’s find out together!

Genetic causes of under-eye wrinkles

The first wrinkles can appear at a very young age, even in our early 20s:

  • the forehead begins to furrow
  • small crow’s feet develop around the eyes
  • We can notice mimic wrinkles around the mouth.

In general, however, it is only around the age of 25 that the amount of substances that make the skin firm begins to decrease. Such substances are collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. With aging, the fat in the deeper layers of the skin decreases, which is why the face loses its elasticity. For example, the amount of collagen in the body decreases by 1% per year, which is why, and due to numerous external and internal factors, wrinkles on the face, under the eyes and all over the body deepen over the years – especially after the age of 50.

What causes aging according to medical science?

Aging is caused by the progressive accumulation of cellular damage, such as misfolded and therefore non-functional proteins. These molecular damages inhibit normal cellular processes, resulting in the death of the affected cell.

Researchers at Erasmus University in the Netherlands believe that the MC1R gene is partly responsible for aging. They hypothesize that certain variants of MC1R may inhibit skin regeneration at the DNA level.

Nature has already invented “immortality,” researchers and doctors “only” need to understand the genetic background to it. By examining such systems,  geneticists at ELTE have arrived at the potential role of mobile genetic elements in causing aging.

However, science has had limited success in extending human lifespan. “Despite decades of research, aging remains a mystery,” reports Scientific American  magazine.

Why aren’t we immortal according to the Bible?

According to the Bible, at the time of creation, man had eternal life. However, with the fall into sin, death appeared – as a judgment. God intervened in the human gene pool. It is true that people lived for several hundred years before the flood, because the atmosphere and favorable climate made this possible. However, the lifespan of Noah’s descendants had already halved with each generation.

In recent millennia, human life has been drastically reduced, as we can read in Psalm 90:9:

“Our life span is seventy years, or if more, eighty years, and most of them are a futile effort, disappearing as quickly as if we were flying.”

Harmful UV-A radiation is also responsible for the formation of wrinkles under the eyes at a young age.

Although genetics primarily determine the structure and texture of the skin, in addition to natural aging, UV-A rays from sunlight and tanning beds are most responsible for wrinkling and deepening of crow’s feet under the eyes, especially in people with fair skin.

Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin, weakening its structure and losing its elasticity. The skin sags and degenerative wrinkles develop around the eyes, on the face, décolleté and all over the body.

People who work outdoors in strong sunlight are more likely to develop premature wrinkles. Covering clothing, such as hats and long sleeves, can delay wrinkling.

Smoking ages the skin – and deepens wrinkles around the eyes!

Pollutants and smoking also contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Smoking can accelerate the normal aging process of the skin. This is because smoking destroys collagen and elastin. In addition, if we smoke from a young age, our skin cells do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients, which makes the skin pale and “age” spots appear sooner.

Stress and mimic wrinkles

Repetitive facial expressions deepen the lines on the face over time. Cheerful people develop laugh lines in old age, which make their faces look nice. Similarly, prolonged stress, rudeness, envy, malice, and depression also become etched into the face over time. Every time we use our facial muscles, a groove forms under the surface of the skin. As the skin ages, it loses its elasticity, and the “indented” grooves become deeper and more distinctive.

For example, it is very common for smokers to develop deep wrinkles around their mouths due to their characteristic movements, as they frequently use muscles that others do not.

In a stressful situation, not only does facial expression change, but valuable nutrients from the accelerated blood flow cannot be properly absorbed into certain layers of the skin, which promotes wrinkling, and the skin’s oxygen supply also decreases. Cortisol, referred to as the stress hormone, was shown in a previous experiment to significantly reduce the production of hyaluronic acid by about 50%, which plays an important role in skin hydration.

The formation of wrinkles is a part of life. The good news is that wrinkles under and around the eyes can be reduced! There are many solutions for this, from plastic surgery to eye cream.
